Scientific Facts about Biofortified Wheat

Two billions people suffer with micronutrient deficiency (zinc and iron) worldwide called as Hidden Hunger. Wheat biofortification is the increased zinc and iron content in wheat grain naturally though conventional plant breeding.

Fifty percent of calories in diets comes from wheat in North India. Wheat flour of biofortified variety provides mineral in natural form. Therefore, no need to worry for zinc and iron supplements if consuming chapati of biofortified wheat variety. Biofortified wheat helps to reduce dependency on synthetic oral medicines and supplements for nutrition. For example, eating ~75 grams of biofortified zinc wheat a day (~2 medium chapattis); nearly 1/3 of daily zinc requirement can be met (Courtney Meyer, www.harvestplus.org)
